Winter Survival & Snow Fun-Lolo (Grades 2-12)
Participants will experience a snow day to remember as they cross country ski or snowshoe atop Lolo Pass. Girls will explore the terrain while learning how to stay safe in adverse conditions. They will learn how to make shelters, how to stay warm, and what they can do to prepare for a winter night outdoors as our friends from Northern Rockies Winter Survival take the girls through hands-on activities that simulate a survival situation.
Weather permitting (because sled dogs don't like heat), girls will get to enjoy meeting the Bitterroot Mushers and their packs of energetic sled dogs. This women's dog sled club is excited to teach Girl Scouts what it takes to be a sled dog racer as well as what it takes to be a sled dog. If conditions cooperate, some girls will get a chance to ride on a dog sled.
The registration fee includes ski package or snowshoe rentals, cross-country skiing and survival instruction, snacks, and wilderness survival supplies. Participants will need to bring their own cold lunch for this event. There will be limited time spent indoors, so proper winter & water-resistant apparel is required. Brownies must be accompanied by a registered parent or troop leader.
Participants will need to report their age, height, and shoe size to the Missoula Girl Scout Office after their registration has been confirmed so gear will be ready-to-go at the rental shop. All Scouts will be divided into age-appropriate groups for the activities and lessons so that each girl has an experience catered to her ability level. Cadettes and older will get to practice more advanced wilderness survival and cross country skiing skills. All registered participants will get to take home their own wilderness survival kits (compass, flashlight, first aid kits, and more). Participants will also get to make their own paracord survival bracelets.
This event is open to girls in grades 2-12 and supervising adults.
