Winter Olympics Snowboarding 1-Missoula (Grades 4-12)
In honor of the 2014 Winter Olympics, Girl Scouts of MT & WY is hosting winter sports programs to promote healthy living and outdoor adventure! Attend two GSMW 'Winter Olympics' programs and earn a 'Girl Scouts Gold Medal'. Check www.GSMW.org for more Winter Olympics programs.
This program is for beginner snowboarders who want to try out the rope tow at Montana Snowbowl. Girls will learn the basics and practice their technique in the rope tow area. Girls and registered adults will learn how to get in and out of their snowboard, how to get off the ground and walk while strapped to their boards, and they will learn and practice heel-side slides and 'falling leaf' maneuvers.
Younger girls are encouraged to take the later lesson ('Winter Olympics Snowboarding 2') because they may get tired quicker.
Girls who practice in the AM may choose to stay on the rope tow until 4pm but their lesson will end at noon. If girls want more of a challenge, they can purchase a half-day T-Bar ticket or a half-day lift ticket after 1PM on their own. Girl Scouts, however, will only be supervising and instructing girls on the rope tow. There is no charge for supervising adults who want to attend to just watch the girls participate.
Participating girls will also have a chance to receive a brand new snowboard package! The selection will be made based on the girls' attitude and aptitude for picking up the sport during their lesson, as well as their compatibility with the available snowboard sizes. A limited number of board packages are available for some very lucky girls!
At 9AM, participants will meet Ursula in the main lodge to check-in (the brown A-Frame building where you buy burgers and lift tickets). Girls are welcome to stay on the rope tow until 4PM. The afternoon lesson starts at 12:30PM. If you want to register for the afternoon half-day lesson, please register for 'Winter Olympics Snowboarding 2'.
The $6 program fee covers instruction, helmet use, and the rope tow fee. A snack bar with a grill and beverages is also available. Girls may choose to pack a lunch or bring about $10 for warm food and warm drinks. Girls will need to bring their own snowboard equipment including a snowboard and snowboard boots. Discounted rentals will be available from Sports Authority on Reserve Street.
This event is open to girls in grades 4-12 and supervising adults and is a very popular event. Register early as it fills fast! Not a Girl Scout yet? Not a problem! Register today and sign up for this winter fun.
