Winter Olympics Curling-Missoula (All ages)
In honor of the 2014 Winter Olympics, Girl Scouts of MT & WY is hosting winter sports programs to promote healthy living and winter activity! Attend two GSMW 'Winter Olympics' programs and earn a 'Girl Scouts Gold Medal'. Check www.GSMW.org for more Winter Olympics programs. Girl Scouts and their parents are invited to Missoula's Glacier Ice Rink to enjoy playing and learning about the Olympic sport of curling.
Players take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called 'rocks', across the ice towards a target area. Teams want to score the most points possible by sliding the stone closest to the center of the target.
Curlers from the Missoula Curling Club will teach participants about the history and rules of curling. Then, everyone will get to try their hand at sliding the 42-pound 'rock' down the curling lanes. Girls, bring your parents along and enjoy some time with them on the ice learning about the relatively new Olympic sport that originated in medieval Scotland in the mid-1500s.
Come to the event dressed in warm clothes, and please wear clean gym shoes. Because of the nature of the sport - heavy rocks & slippery ice - this event is not open to tagalongs, but adult relatives of registered Girl Scouts are welcome to register to attend and participate.
This event is open to girls K-12 and supervising adults.
