Intro to Backpacking, Horsepacking, & Trail Crew-Lincoln (Grades 6-12)
GSMW, The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation (BMWF), and The All Women's Outdoor Leadership Institute (AWOL) are offering an affordable and rewarding experience in the backcountry of Montana's glorious Bob Marshall Wilderness. Join girls from across Montana & Wyoming for a horse-aided backpacking trip you will never forget!
From Wednesday, July 30th until Sunday, August 3rd, participants will get a unique opportunity to learn outdoor skills, discover their personal strengths, and to provide service to others through work that will improve access to some of Montana’s most serene and awesome natural spaces. And horses will help you get the job done!
Service to the wilderness will include cutting back overgrown brush on the trail, rehabilitating campsites, pulling weeds, and much more. We will also have traditional pack support (horses and mules) to help get group gear to camp.
And it's not all about work. Girls will also enjoy engaging activities that promote personal well-being, enhance self-esteem, and increase girls' confidence. In addition, each day will include lessons on environmental science, natural history, and plant & animal identification.
Girls are required to provide their own transportation to the meeting spot near Lincoln, MT. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. In order to participate, Cadettes must be 12 years of age or older. Plus, we may have room on the trip for any leaders who want to become Outdoor III Trained so they can take their own troop backpacking in the future. Preference will be given to girl registrants before adults, however. Adults must call Sarah M. to get on the waiting list.
Scholarships are available! The AWOL Institute also has all the backpacking gear you need other than shoes. So, if you need a backpack, a sleeping bag, a tent, or any other item, just ask AWOL - they have you covered.
Registration through ebiz is not available for this program. To register, or for more information, please contact Sarah M. at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 1.800.736.5243 x2306.
This event is open to girls in grades 6-12 and supervising adults.
