Troop 1175 from Story, Wyoming recently spent the day enjoying the World’s Largest Mineral Hot Springs in Thermopolis, Wyoming.

Dabi tested the waters with the girls and had a great time. She hitched a ride on a couple of inner tubes and experimented with osmosis to see if she could earn badges by roosting on the heads of the girls.

GSMW celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting with a Birthday Bash and cake, of course!

“I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight!” –Juliette Gordon Low, Founder, Girl Scouts of the USA

On March 12th, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, Juliette Gordon Low called together 18 girls to the first Girl Scout troop meeting. She believed in the power of girl leadership before women could even vote in the United States.

In honor of Low’s vision, which has now reached 3.2 million members and 50 million alumnae, Girl Scouts celebrated their 100th birthday in March.

In Billings, more than 800 Girl Scouts, volunteers, alumna, delegates, and supporters joined together the last weekend of March to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting. Centennial celebrants traveled from as far as Cheyenne and Kalispell to celebrate this historic birthday.

Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming’s Centennial Celebration was a celebration of sisterhood and the organization’s success across the years and included fundraising, birthday cake, PJs, a special panel of inspirational women, a Juliette Gordon Low actress, and so much more!

Team Artificial Intelligence after passing the software, hardware and field inspections at the FIRST Tech World Championships.

Artificial Intelligence, Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming First Tech Challenge Robotics Team, has returned home from the World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri! The team of seven engineering students from Billings Career center competed head-to-head with 128 national and international teams with Nemonoid, a robot they designed, built, and programmed themselves.

The team earned their way to the national competition earlier this year in Bozeman, where they took home the Inspire Award at the Montana First Tech Challenge competition. They received the award for their professionalism, teamwork, communication, robot design, and presentation overall, granting them an automatic invite to the FTC World Championship in St. Louis.

At the World Championship, the team had the opportunity to meet national and international FTC champions, see supporters of FTC like will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas and retired NBA basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as well as participate in a competition of gracious professionalism.

Artificial Intelligence competed in eight qualifying rounds across two days. The judges were impressed with the team’s advanced drive train system, sportsmanship, and engineering notebook, but unfortunately team Artificial Intelligence did not obtain a final spot in the championship round.

GSMW is extremely proud of the team! The seven team members contributed more than 850 hours of their time to Artificial Intelligence and the creation of their robot Nemonoid. From this experience, the team members were able to apply real-world math and science concepts while developing problem-solving, organizational, and team-building skills.

Graduating seniors from the team include a valedictorian and several who secured either full-ride or partial scholarships to universities to continue their engineering educations.

Some of the 200 girls celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting in Casper!

Girl Scouts kicked off 2012 with the second in a series of six events celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts journeyed through the 1930s and 904s, an era marked by hardships including the Great Depression, World War II, and the opening years of a post-war world.

This time in American History saw an explosion of big screen idols, musicals, the big band sound, cartooning, and even at-home board games – not to mention the first commercially baked Girl Scout Cookies!

Duct tape picture frames were some of the many activities girls participated in at Casper's Journey Through Girl Scouting.

About 200 Girl Scouts from Montana and Wyoming met and mingled while learning about this time era.

Among the many activity booths, girls made duct tape picture frames (photographs were often the only keepsakes to hold onto as loved ones left to find work or to fight in the war), played popular board games of the time (computers had yet to be developed), gathered supplies to plant a spring garden (Victory Gardens were planted during this time to aid the war effort and provide morale boosts to gardeners), and girls even experienced what some of the first Girl Scout cookies would have tasted like.

Girls also learned about entertainment of the time, from cartoon flip books to the boogie-woogie and other jiving swing dances. Girl Scouts enjoyed simple meals reflecting on this time of want, learning how women and Girl Scouts came to the aide of their country during a time of great need.

Girls then traveled to Cody, Wyoming, to experience the 50s and 60s! Groovy!

Dabi tries skiing!

You’ll recall from a previous blog that Dabi tried out snowboarding, and she also hit the slopes with Cadette Troop 3756 of Stevensville to try out skiing. She even got to experience a trip to the Ski Patrol first aid room. Not to worry, all ended well and everyone had a grand time!

Dabi also hitched a ride on a snowmobile in Cook City.

The adventure took her up the Scotch Bonnet area to an elevation of 10,100 feet! That’s the highest Dabi’s climbed so far.

Dabi’s been spotted traveling the Wyoming highways, and recently took a trip with Girl Scout troops 1175 (of Story), 1333, 1334, 1015 (of Sheridan), and 1689 (of Tongue River) to the Journey Through Girl Scouting celebration in Cody.

The caravan stopped in Emblem, Wyoming on their way home to nearly quadruple the town’s population!

They also stopped at Granite Pass in the Big Horn Mountains to say “Hi!” to a moose and check out the snow.

Dabi visits Buford, Wyoming, touted as the nation's smallest town.

Dabi took another adventure with Troop 1351 of Cheyenne, Wyoming, for a hike around Vedauwoo, a place of great beauty and interesting rock formations located off Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie.

The closest town to Vedauwoo is Buford, Wyoming, with a population of ONE!

Two hundred Girl Scouts gathered together in Cody this past weekend to continue the Journey through 100 years of Girl Scouting!

Girl Scouts rocked their way through the 1950s and 1960s. Era-themed activities included microwavable 3-2-1 ice-cream cupcakes, “Money House” Game Show, Sharpie tie-dye bandanas, and a ‘Charlotte’s Web’ web making. Girls also learned how to make their own bubblegum, playdough, and root beer.

Bettie Marie Daniels (a Lifetime Member of Girl Scouting) teaches girls how to make homemade root beer!

Girl Scouts danced around the clock in their best poodle skirts at their very own sock hop. The sleepover continued with popcorn and “Herbie, the Love Bug,” a popular drive in movie of the era.

Jean Harm concluded our Cody Birthday Party the following morning by leading us all in a Girl Scouts Own – “What was your favorite thing about the Cody event?”

A special Thank You to Sandy Luthy, who was the lead on the Cody Journey Through Girl Scouting. This event could not have been done without her and all the volunteers who gave their time to building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Dabi takes flight!

Dabi Duck is on the move! This nimble Duck Scout was seen flying over the Pacific Ocean, where she took some time to play at Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, with Khamis of Troop 1049 in Cheyenne.

Dabi was also spotted in Mexico, where she spent a couple of days in the Gulf of Mexico.

While swimming in the ocean, Dabi was picked up by a passing sailing ship…filled with pirates! After dodging their attempts to capture Dabi, the crew and captain explained something very important: Dabi was aboard the Buccaneer Queen, a tour ship!

Dabi wasn’t in any danger at all, so she enjoyed taking in the natural formations around Cabo and was even allowed to pilot the Queen back into the harbor!

Dabi arrived with troop 3530 packing 100 year posters and excited to learn!

On February 18, Dabi attended World Thinking Day in Bozeman to learn about different periods and cultures from around the world, and “sampled” a few of the Girl Scout Cookies that were on hand.

After helping set up, Dabi explored the other booths and had a blast learning about all the different cultures and places that the girls had researched.
